Sadly, Barry is from up North. But he
makes up for this with his brilliant bass playing (I swear he
never has to practice) and great vocals. He claims he was not
alive in the 60's & early 70's, but we know better. He was
born in Wolverhampton (wherever that is) in 1942 (he says 1958).
He has started collecting
guitars, specializing in ridiculous bargains. He also extends
this ability to his cars and anything else he buys. He plays a
Rickenbacker and a Fender Precision, but keeps some more hidden
from the public.
Barry has been playing for
centuries now. He lives in the 70's era of music and would love
to play all 70's songs. We allow him to do some now and again.
His musical background is varied and he has even worked as a DJ!
In his teens, Barry had to choose between joining Hull City as a professional footballer or his music. He chose to become a pop star. Although invited to join major bands, Barry decided to save himself for Best Served Chilled - and we are grateful.
His bass is fed through a
Hartke amp with 2 cabs which has a very good tonal range and plenty of
drive. There's no problem hearing Barry!
Here's a tip for bass players -
before a gig, boil your strings (take them off the guitar
first .). This brightens the sound and makes them sound like
new. Whenever Barry does this, he puts the strings back and tunes
them to where he thinks they are in tune. When we check them at
the gig, he is virtually spot on - every time!!! We think he has
perfect pitch.
Fortunately, Barry is blessed
with a superb voice. His rendition of "Angels" always
gets the audience going. In our last set, we play mainly dance
music and this is where Barry comes into his own. It is a
struggle to prevent the last set becoming a '70's revival, but we
always get a good response to the music. We've recently added The
Sensational Alex Harvey Band's version of Delilah. Barry launches
into this with gusto (one of my favourite Italian dishes) and
usually brings the house down (that's why we only play once at
each venue).
